PAPERBOUND was born in 2022 out of love for zines and a grant from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. This year we're again funded by AFK so we hope to bring you an exciting event once again. Join us for the weekend of the 27th until the 29th of October at DE BOUWPUT, AGA LAB & Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum.

We'll open the fair at the Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum on Friday the 27th at 17:00 with a small talk about what's to come. Bring your work and join the walk-in riso workshops at DE BOUWPUT on Saturday and Sunday. Or have your T-Shirt printed at AGA LAB, also on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be two presentations by Not Just a Collective and Roots to Fruits about their zines and work at the Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum, check the exact schedule per location here.

There will be tasty bites and drinks by Japanese Kitchen Hiro and resident. DJ Field Marshall Fred will take care of the musical selection. And of course check our tabling participants here.

In this solo exhibition, Chris van Walsum explores the relationship between the sky and his inner turmoil, placing great value on provoking strong emotions within his subjects

Tackling themes such as childhood, anxiety, obsession and human interaction,

‘The Sky of a Made Up World' presents a collection of works that, over the course of time, have combined acrylic painting and collage techniques; pictorial elements inspired by romanticism and abstract expressionist methods.

His baroque attitude is embodied in his large-scale paintings, where he places great value on both sublimity and emotion. Chris has employed a diversity of materials including leather photo albums, eyelets; a wide range of imagery and fragments of text; as well as thickly applied paint, modeling paste, and pumice stone.

The exhibition features a variety of works, including large and small-scale paintings, collage, as well as drawings on paper.

Touching the void

Bij Broedplaats Bouw

Touching the void signifies delving into infinity, the pursuit of an unknown destination within the realm of art.
It's about being astonished by one’s own creation; That moment when you lose yourself in the act of painting, in the very action, allowing the unforeseen to manifest. It becomes an adventure, where the canvas resembles a treasure map inviting excitement. A work Finds its ultimate rest only when it reaches the uncharted and the unfamiliar. This grants not just freedom in the method but also in the outcome.
Delving into infinity. The Sensation of wandering through towering dungeons resembling glass skyscrapers that exclude an air of toxicity, a dystopian quality. A realm of pure potentiality, transcending the ordinary.

Opening Thursday 21 September from 5 pm - 9 pm. The finissage on Sunday.

The Wills and the Ways of the Beekeepers is a series of whimsical and colourful drawings, inspired by Pieter Brueghel’s drawing The Beekeepers and the Birdnester (1568), that explore the nature of labour, creativity and identity. These drawings imagine a society of such beekeepers, with the key detail that the beekeepers themselves are composed of millions of bees working in concert to imitate humanoid forms in order to carry out various types of labour. Referencing a range of human crafts and creative traditions, from Ethiopian coffee ceremonies to Chinese paper lanterns or Catholic carnivals, this series is a celebration of human craft and handiwork. Beekeeper society embodies the concept of Homo Faber, or Human the Creator, while their blurring boundaries between collective and individual identity raises questions about the nature of labour and creativity.

The drawings are rich in detail, and the viewers are invited to explore the beekeepers’ world as curious anthropologists and archaeologists and to imagine the stories and meanings within.

Gus Møystad (b. 1992 NO/NL) is an illustrator, comics artist, and writer whose work explores themes of vulnerability, liminality and belonging. His art practice is expressed through various forms, including printmaking, drawing, and traditional storytelling. His stories are often inspired by history, folklore, and the hybrid, multifaceted nature of identity, both personal and collective. A conversation between these themes, as well as historical and artistic research and a deep interest in craft, embodied experience and fiction-making, results in imaginative, and often tender (visual) stories set in his own fantastical world. His artistic practice involves playing the role of the anthropologist exploring his secondary world by way of artistic research. In this way, mythical ‘secondary’ worlds become a meeting point between fiction and reality, a kind of utopia through which our real world politics and histories are investigated.
